Why do kids in the elementary school need a counselor?

Studies have shown that early intervention with kids is the key to helping them succeed.

 

Isn't school counseling just for those kids and families that have major problems?

No. Prevention is always better than intervention.

 

Which students do you work with?

I work with all students.  I present weekly lessons to all students.  My goal is to help all students develop academically, personally, and socially.  I also work with students in small groups and individually.

 

How do you decide which students you will meet with in small groups or individually?

Referrals can come from teachers, parents or students.

 

What kinds of things might cause kids to have problems in school?

  • Difficulty in learning.

  • Poor organizational skills.

  • Poor study skills.

  • Difficulty in making and/or keeping friends.

  • Getting teased or picked on.

  • Low self-esteem.

  • Peer pressure to become involved in unhealthy activities.

  • Drug or alcohol abuse in the family.

  • Abuse or neglect in the family.

  • Excessive fighting in the family.

  • Divorce or separation in the family.

  • Sickness or death in the family.

 

What can I do, as a parent, to help my child be successful?

  • Encourage learning both in and out of school.

  • Have good communication with your child’s teacher.

  • Participate in school activities.

  • Celebrate your child’s successes.

  • Help your child understand that mistakes or failures are part

       of the learning process.

  • Listen to your child’s concerns.

  • Have fair, reasonable and consistent rules.

  • Help your child learn that all behavior (positive or negative)

       has consequences.
